Periodontology or periodontics is the branch of dentistry that encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of the periodontium which are the supporting tissues of the teeth and include the jaw bone, gums and periodontal ligament. Diseases of the periodontium, such as periodontitis, are a leading cause of tooth loss and can also lead to other systemic health issues.
