  • Periodontology or periodontics is the branch of dentistry that encompasses the diagnosis and treatment of the periodontium which are the supporting tissues of the teeth and include the jaw bone, gums and periodontal ligament. Diseases of the periodontium, such as periodontitis, are a leading cause of tooth loss and can also lead to other systemic health issues.

Gum and periodontal diseasesPeriodontal diseases, also known as gum diseases, are a wide spread oral health issue. Several of these diseases are mostly painless and thus often go unnoticed in their earlier stages.

Gingivitis

Gingivitis is an early stage of gum disease resulting from plaque-induced inflammation. It is characterized by redness, swelling, and frequent bleeding.

Periodontitis

Periodontitis is a bacterial-induced inflammatory disease that can occur at any age. It is a more severe form of gingivitis that, if left untreated, can lead to several complications, such as the following:

  • Loosening and migration of teeth
  • Bone destruction adjacent teeth
  • Tooth loss

Periodontists specialize in treating these diseases. They have the expertise to effectively prevent, diagnose, and treat gingivitis, periodontitis, and the potential complications associated with these conditions. Periodontists also specialize in restoring form and function following resolution of periodontitis with the use of bone and gum grafts and dental implant surgery.
